World Breastfeeding Week | August 1–7

Today marks the start of World Breastfeeding Week.

2026 Theme: Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: strengthen what works

This year we focus on scaling what we already know works to support breastfeeding.

What works:
- Skilled counselling increased exclusive breastfeeding by 58%
- Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative increased exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months by 45%
- Paid maternity leave was linked to a 52% increase in exclusive breastfeeding
- Strong laws on breast-milk substitutes led to 54% exclusive breastfeeding rates vs 24% with no laws
- Workplace support and mass media campaigns also show clear gains

The proof is there. Now we need action at scale.

Let’s strengthen the Warm Chain of Support. For families, workplaces, health systems, and communities. So every child gets the healthiest start in life.
